Project Overview

As part of the National Portrait Gallery's landmark £41 million redevelopment, Universal Coatings (UK) Ltd was appointed by Gilbert Ash and Purcell Architects to undertake the complete restoration of the Gallery's historic perimeter railings and ornate entrance gates.

Unlike many restoration projects carried out entirely on-site, this contract required the careful dismantling, transportation and off-site restoration of the heritage ironwork within Universal Coatings' specialist restoration facility. This approach allowed our craftsmen to undertake extensive conservation, casting and coating works in a controlled workshop environment, delivering exceptional quality whilst minimising disruption within central London.

  • Reinstallation, alignment and final adjustment of all railings and gates.

  • Temporary pedestrian management throughout the project.

The Challenge

The National Portrait Gallery's perimeter railings form an important part of the building's architectural character. Decades of weathering had resulted in corrosion, damaged decorative features and deteriorating coatings, requiring specialist intervention.

The project demanded not only exceptional restoration craftsmanship but also careful logistical planning to safely remove, transport, restore and reinstall hundreds of metres of historic ironwork without compromising its historic integrity.

Working within one of London's busiest public spaces also required meticulous planning to maintain pedestrian access whilst preserving this nationally significant heritage asset.

Our Workshop Restoration Expertise

A defining feature of this project was the extensive off-site restoration programme undertaken within Universal Coatings' dedicated heritage restoration workshop.

Each railing panel and gate was individually catalogued before being carefully removed from site and transported to our facility. Working under controlled workshop conditions enabled our restoration specialists to achieve a level of quality and precision that would not have been possible on-site.

Damaged decorative components were painstakingly repaired, whilst missing and irreparable features were recreated using traditional casting techniques. Our in-house restoration team produced new finials and bespoke castings that seamlessly matched the original Victorian detailing, ensuring the restored railings retained their authentic historic appearance.

Following repairs, every component underwent meticulous surface preparation before receiving a bespoke protective coating system designed to provide long-term corrosion protection while preserving the architectural character of the Gallery.

Once restoration was complete, the fully refurbished railings and gates were carefully transported back to London and reinstalled, ensuring precise alignment and a flawless finished appearance.

Project Outcome

The completed works have restored one of London's most recognisable heritage frontages, delivering:

  • Complete off-site restoration of historic railings and gates.

  • Specialist conservation of original cast and wrought iron.

  • Manufacture of bespoke replacement castings and decorative finials.

  • Long-term corrosion protection through a high-performance protective coating system.

  • Sympathetic reinstatement preserving the Gallery's historic character.

  • A durable finish designed to reduce future maintenance requirements.
