Preserving One of Scotland's Most Important Heritage Structures

Universal Coatings (UK) Ltd was proud to play a key role in the restoration of the iconic Palm Houses at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, one of Scotland's most significant heritage conservation projects.

The Grade A Listed Victorian glasshouses form the centrepiece of the Edinburgh Biomes programme, an ambitious restoration designed to safeguard these historic structures for future generations while protecting one of the world's most important living plant collections. The project involved the restoration of extensive historic ironwork, replacement glazing, stone repairs and major infrastructure improvements before reopening to the public in 2026.

Our Scope

Working as the specialist protective coatings contractor, Universal Coatings undertook the careful preparation, restoration and application of specialist protective coating systems to the historic structural steelwork and cast iron elements throughout the Palm Houses.

Our responsibilities included:

  • Specialist abrasive preparation of historic ferrous metalwork.

  • Detailed treatment of intricate Victorian cast and wrought iron.

  • Application of heritage-approved protective coating systems.

  • Minor cast iron repairs

  • On-site coating inspections and quality assurance.

  • Working within fully enclosed environmental containment systems.

  • Supporting the preservation of original fabric wherever practical.

Every stage of the works demanded meticulous attention to detail to ensure the historic character of the structures was maintained whilst providing a modern protective coating system capable of delivering long-term durability.

Heritage Conservation Expertise

Projects of this nature require considerably more than conventional industrial painting.

The Palm Houses feature highly decorative Victorian ironwork, complex glazing bars, spiral staircases, elevated walkways and hundreds of unique structural components, all requiring specialist preparation and finishing techniques. Restoration works also had to be undertaken alongside ongoing conservation activities to protect the historic fabric of the buildings and the surrounding environment.

Universal Coatings' extensive experience in heritage restoration enabled our team to deliver coating solutions that respected the original construction while meeting today's demanding performance standards.

Quality Without Compromise

Our experienced operatives worked to rigorous quality control procedures throughout the project, ensuring coating application, environmental conditions and inspection processes consistently met project specifications.

Operating within one of Scotland's most prestigious heritage environments required close collaboration with the wider project team and careful planning to achieve the exceptionally high standards expected on nationally important conservation works.

Working Safely in a Lead Environment

Much of the original protective coating contained lead, requiring stringent health, safety and environmental controls throughout every stage of the works.

Universal Coatings operated within fully enclosed Class A (CLAW) containment systems, specifically designed to prevent the release of hazardous dust and debris into the surrounding environment. These specialist enclosures enabled the safe removal of lead-containing coatings while protecting operatives, neighbouring trades and the internationally important botanical collections.

Working within these controlled environments required highly trained personnel, specialist extraction and filtration equipment, strict decontamination procedures, continuous environmental monitoring and robust quality management to ensure compliance with project requirements and current health and safety legislation.
